Buff City Soap: Lathering Up Downtown Jonesboro

A new Downtown Jonesboro business has made it its mission to supply the community with healthier skin alternatives. Located on Main Street, Buff City Soap offers an array of handmade soaps, bath bombs, facial products and more.

Established in Bartlett, Tenn., in 2013, Buff City Soap currently has more than 15 locations across the country in states such as Tennessee, Florida, Colorado, Mississippi, Alabama, Texas, Kentucky and, now, Arkansas.

Before opening Arkansas’ first location, husband and wife duo Allen and Nikki Powell, natives of Covington, Tenn., recall the impact that Buff City Soap’s products had on them after experiencing them for the first time.

“We started using the products several years ago and fell in love with what it was doing for our skin,” said Nikki. “Needless to say, we were hooked. We wanted to be able to share these products with others.”

After deciding to become a part of the franchise, the pair tried to find the perfect spot for their Buff City Soap location. The Powells had visited Jonesboro many times and felt that it was the perfect location for their new business to thrive.

“After searching, we knew that Downtown Jonesboro was a perfect fit for Buff City Soap,” said Allen. “The downtown area had the exact vibe we were looking for in Jonesboro.”

Buff City Soap’s mission is to give its customers a healthier alternative in their daily hygiene regimen, ultimately benefitting their skin.

“The majority of the trusted brands people are washing with and putting on their skin are made mainly with detergents, chemicals and tallow,” said Allen. “All of our products at Buff City Soap are made in-house and are all plant-based ingredients.”

“Also, the products that we sell work to promote healthier skin, while also being extra moisturizing,” added Nikki.

Once guests walk into Jonesboro’s Buff City Soap, the soap makery bar is a very prominent feature. It is at the bar that each of the employees craft and create each of the products that are sold in-store. Some of the main ingredients that are used in Buff City Soap’s products include olive oil, coconut oil, palm oil and shea butter.

“Our most popular items include our moisturizing soaps, unique bath bombs, activated charcoal facial bars and our laundry soap,” said Allen.

Some of the most popular soaps, which are also available in bath bombs, include the Narcissist scent, which is a blend of peach, raspberry and patchouli sandalwood, and the Oatmeal + Honey scent, which is made with oatmeal, milk and honey with grounds of oats for skin exfoliation.

Buff City Soap’s hand-crafted laundry soap also comes in more than 15 different scents, all made with coconut oil, citric acid and washing powder for a safe, sweet-smelling cleanser.

“Personally, my favorite items are our facial products,” said Nikki. “They are absolutely amazing, and I feel as though they do what they claim.”

All facial products are made in-store and include cleansers, masks, scrubs, lip balms, toners and eye creams. Each of these products works to draw impurities out of the skin, while also leaving the skin feeling fresh and rejuvenated.

An array of men’s products is also available in-store, including beard balms and beard oils, giving the beard a luxurious and pampered look. More travel-sized products, such as the shampoo and conditioner bars, are also slated to release in the near future.

“If guests don’t know what to purchase, I recommend our customers come in, sniff around and spend some time here,” said Allen. “You don’t have to spend any money, just spend some time and try out our testers to see what you really like.”

The local soap makery can also host bath bomb making parties, whether it be for a birthday celebration or friendly gathering. These parties can be scheduled by calling Jonesboro’s Buff City Soap or reaching out to the business via Facebook.

As for gift alternatives, Buff City Soap also offers an array of options designed to fit any occasion.

“We can customize colors and scents for weddings, bridal parties and birthday parties, among other things,” said Nikki. “We encourage guests to come by to find out what all of the options are.”

Though Buff City Soap is the first of its kind in the Downtown Jonesboro community, the feedback that has come from its customers has continued to be overwhelmingly positive.

“The community has been so incredible,” said Nikki. “Business seems to be picking up weekly, and the downtown community really is a friendly bunch.”

At the end of the day, Allen says that as long as he, Nikki and their employees get to make and sell products that positively benefit the community, all of the hard work is well worth it.

“The most rewarding part of it all is knowing that we are selling products that we believe in, that aren’t harmful and that we use and love ourselves,” said Allen. “… We truly appreciate all of the support we have received from the Jonesboro community. Everyone has been so supportive and welcoming. We want to thank everyone so much for their kind words and constant encouragement.”
