Welcoming Something Sweet to Main Street

Established in Memphis in 2007, Cupcake Cutie, Etc. quickly became a favorite among locals looking for a homemade sweet treat. Twelve years later, owner Robert Clayton has brought the delicious destination to the streets of Downtown Jonesboro.

Clayton, a Memphis native, has always had a passion for cooking and baking sweet treats. When Clayton and his business partner, Emeka Buck, found out that one of their three daughters was diagnosed with autism and a seizure disorder, they began to look for work that could keep them close to her at all times.

“I’ve always loved to cook and bake, and my business partner is an amazing artist,” said Clayton. “During the time spent closely with our daughter, we created a business that would give us more time to keep a watchful eye on her.”

After opening Cupcake Cutie, Etc. at its Memphis location, the two were able to utilize their talents while also making sure that their daughter had the constant care she needed. The couple’s locally-grown cupcake business quickly became a hot spot, gaining the attention of cupcake lovers outside of the Memphis area, as well as national attention from the “Pickler & Ben” show.

“Over the past few years, we’ve received a lot of visitors from Jonesboro at our Memphis location,” said Clayton. “They kept asking us to come to Jonesboro, so we stepped out on faith and said, ‘Let’s do it.’”

While a dedicated staff handles the Memphis location, Clayton devotes his time to driving to Jonesboro each day to run the business, which opened its doors in February.

“Our mission with Cupcake Cutie was to create a business that brings happiness to someone through sweets,” said Clayton. “This business is also something we can hopefully pass down to our daughters.”

The Cupcake Cutie, Etc. experience is unlike anything that Jonesboro has seen before. Upon walking into the shop, located on Main Street in Downtown Jonesboro, guests will notice a bar area that is stocked with an array of cupcake toppings and several cake flavors. It’s at the bar that each guest can customize their own cupcake, available in standard, jumbo and mini sizes. Mini-cupcakes must be pre-ordered.

“At Cupcake Cutie, our goal is to give you an experience like no other bakery,” said Clayton. “We bake fresh daily and offer six different in-house flavors, nine specialty cake flavors, six different icings and have over 20 different toppings.”

Cupcake Cutie’s slogan asks, “Why give an ordinary cupcake to any extraordinary person?” The phrase emphasizes the fact that each guest can create their own cupcake concoction by combining different cake flavors and toppings at the bar. Guests can also choose from several homemade icings to top off their cupcake, including buttercream, chocolate, strawberry, cream cheese and more.

“Our daily cake flavors include butter, chocolate, lemon, strawberry, red velvet and French vanilla,” said Clayton. “Each day also has a different specialty cake flavor; Monday is peach cobbler, Tuesday is pineapple, Wednesday is banana pudding, Thursday is Oreo, Friday is rum and Saturday is Key Lime.”

Other than serving fresh cupcakes each day, Cupcake Cutie, Etc. also offers other sweet treats such as homemade cake cookies, cheesecakes, Sinnamon Rolls and the unique Cakeshake, which is a cupcake that is blended together with ice cream, creating a unique and flavorful shake.

Cupcake Cutie, Etc. can also cater to any upcoming event, whether it be a wedding, birthday, baby shower or graduation. Customized cupcakes and cakes can be ordered by reaching out to the business via phone, email or Facebook.

“We are so excited and honored to have Cupcake Cutie, Etc. bring their second location to Downtown Jonesboro,” said Lindsey Wingo, executive director of the Downtown Jonesboro Association. “Their cupcakes are delicious, and Robert and the staff are so welcoming. Once you smell the cupcakes from outside, you can’t help but to stop in.”

At the end of the day, Clayton says that he is happy to offer something to the Jonesboro community that puts a smile on customers’ faces, all while doing something that he enjoys.

“One of the most rewarding parts of owning Cupcake Cutie is simply the ability to do something that we love doing,” said Clayton. “We hope for continued growth, eventually becoming a household name.”
